The eighth edition in the series will be the biggest yet, spanning six discs compared to the usual three or four. It was recorded live on October 25th, 2015, at Stereo, a club known for its afterhours parties and marathon sets. (Digweed actually played for 11 hours that night.) In among the 80 plus featured tracks, there are efforts from Sei A, Damian Lazarus & The Ancient Moons,Leonardo Gonnelli, Agoria and Adam Beyer, as well as three Recondite cuts. “It’s hard to pinpoint one particular highlight as I was loving every part of the night with the energy from the build-up and the reaction I was getting from the floor,” he says. “Playing Eagles & Butterflies’ rework of DK8’s ‘Murder Was The Bass’ was a real moment as the place exploded. It’s really important on nights like this that you pace yourself so you don’t give the crowd everything too early; you always want them to keep wanting more. I remember looking at my watch around 9 AM and thinking I have not really started banging it yet, but the place was going nuts and over the next four hours the energy in the room hit another level. It’s a real pleasure to play on that soundsystem for that long.”
Seth Troxler’s Play It Say It label is rapidly becoming synonymous with bruisingly no-nonsense house, having released great 12″s from the likes of Steve Lawler, Butch, and the Mekanism. Seth’s decided to step away from the barbecue for a bit and focused his energy on signing new talent to his imprint, as a result, step forward Florentine producer Leonardo Gonnelli.
Gonnelli’s already released on the likes of Dirtybird, Suara, and Defected, so it’s not that odd that he’s popped up on one of contemporary clubbing’s up and coming labels. His hot off the presses “Tonda” 12″ is an acid-tinged whirl round the perimeters of one of those big rooms us dance music writers like to talk about so much.
We’re bringing you the world exclusive listen to it right here. Yes, you read that right. You can hear it right now. Right here. Right here, right now. We also had a quick chat with Leonardo, and you can read that while you listen to “Tonda” if you so wish.
THUMP: Tell us how you hooked up with Seth and the Play It Say It gang?
Leonardo: I’m really glad to be on Play It Say It, Seth is an amazing artist and a great person, so I’m feeling honored to work with him and his label. I remember about one year ago or so I sent to Seth a message to say him “thanks for supporting my track “Soledad.”” Seth answered and said that it was definitely one of his favourites of that summer. So from there I decided to send him something I’d been working on and he said he wanted to release it on Play It Say It. I want to say thanks again to Seth for believing in my projects!
